Jean Grey

Described as Progressive Melodic Death Metal, Jean Grey utilizes chunky riffs darkly blended with speed, blazing drums and rolling bass lines as the vocals fire from serpentine to gutteral. Locally grown from their roots in Eugene, Oregon, Jean Grey is gaining recognition for their meticulous approach to their craft. The band is expanding their reach and blazing trails with their new partner, San Bruno, California based Contorted Records. Our thanks to Rob McCrea at Contorted for helping to set this up and vocalist Dan Dooley for taking the time to complete this interview with hurdcore.com

Jean Grey vocalist Dan Dooley Progressive Death Metal Eugene Oregon

How has your recent signing with Contorted Records expanded your ability and/or strategy in promoting your music?
Dan Dooley (vocals): Signing with Contorted has opened up a whole new door for us. To go from pretty much nothing to having a group of talented individuals who know the buisness and believe in the music is incredible. We are able to use many avenues now that we were not able to before being a DIY band. We are now able to get our music to people around the world, play in areas we have not before, and have reviews and radio air play. To go from nothing to something is invaluable.

Abysmal is your latest release, is there a central meaning or theme for this album?
DD: Most of the songs on Abysmal were written at different times so there is no main concept behind the record. But I would definitely say that there is a feeling of struggle. Many of the songs deal with some form of a struggle and the helplessness of the situation in the song.

When did you go from music fan to performer?
DD: I myself started playing in bands when I was 20. I had originally started out playing guitar in my late teens and that is what I wanted to play. But I got to a certain level and just never really pushed myself to get better. By this point though I had started trying out vocals and discoverd I was decent enough to get away with it. I have also enjoyed writing since I was a kid so that translated over to writing lyrics well.

Was Jean Grey the first attempt or was this project birthed from the remains of other ventures?
DD: Jean Grey was started back in 2006 when all of the members were either still in, or right out of high school. So it was pretty much a first attempt for all of the members in the band at the time.

What about the method behind your madness do you believe makes Jean Grey unique from other progressive/metal bands?
DD: I think the fact that we are not afraid to try different things and experiment with our music is what makes us different from other bands. Some bands can get stuck to a certain subgenre and for whatever reason they only play that style and never try anything new. To me, that gets boring very fast. We don’t want to be pigeon hold to a certain genre of metal. We want to be able to do whatever pops into our head and not be afraid to do it. Some bands are afraid of that but we are not.

For 2012, what is on the calendar for the band?
DD: We have a lot of exciting things coming up this year. We will be hitting the road this summer for a string of tours in, OR, WA, ID, CA, NV. We will also be releasing a new record later this year that we are very excited about. We will be keeping people up to date on our Facebook page with tour dates and studio updates from the recording of this next record. The future looks very bright for Jean Grey so keep your eyes peeled!!

Jean Grey (Melodic Death Metal – Eugene, OR) is Dan Dooley – Vocals; Bannon Hunt – Guitar; Charles Wilson – Drums; Benjamin Orozco – Guitar; Matt Edwards – Bass. Their latest release Abysmal on Contorted Records. Keep up to date with them on Jean Gray FB.

Becoming The Archetype Solid State Records Celestial Completion Metal

These metal nerds may enjoy long discussions about science and philosophy over making it rain or smashing hotel rooms, but when it comes to deep, dark and cerebral metal there is none fresher than Becoming The Archetype. Clifton, BTA’s bearded skull mascot, and the boys have once again rallied together to hammer out 11 tracks of face melting metal mayhem that will leave your body bruised, your mind sweating and your appetite for something epic awakened, if not exhausted. With the release of Celestial Completion on Solidstate Records, Becoming The Archetype has once again raised the bar for authentic, brutal and invigoratingly heavy music. BTA’s signature sound weaves a beauty into the brutality accompanied by a complexity of tonal components that few bands of the dark genres are willing to attempt.

There’s picking up a guitar, there’s jamming as a band then there are the dynamics of layers within music, harmonies, subtleties and various tweaks that take something from good to epic. As a student of music and a band that has made a mark in pushing your sound, what are some of the intricacies of the writing process that the casual fan may not be aware of?
Seth Hecox – Guitar/Keys: We put a ton of thought into each song and really work to refine it. Songwriting is a bit lost in the heavy music scene and we’re focusing on that a lot lately. It’s not as easy as it seemed at first. But it helps that we have so many instruments at our disposal. And as if we didn’t have enough already, we brought in horns, violin, sitar and female operatic vocals!

When do you know if you’ve gone too far and the band has ventured into the territory of too processed, too produced, too epic or too technical?
SH: That’s a difficult one. The best defense against any error is to be aware of it and constantly judge yourself to see where you stand so you know when you’re approaching an overkill. I will also say that being extreme in almost any way is usually acceptable in small doses. The problem is when you get too extreme in one facet for an entire album. Then you really risk being one-dimensional.

You’ve had some success with instigating social trends (ie beard-core) and the scene is primed for a shift in creative expression that it can again beat to death a thousand different ways – do you think BTA will be the instigator of a new trend of Metal-nerds?
SH: Haha, I sure hope so! You know, I think a lot of our fans and general metal fans were secretly nerds already, just like we were. We figured we’d come out of the nerd closet and reveal ourselves and people are quickly identifying with that. Being the Kings of Nerd Metal is a nice title and we’ll wear the crown as kindly as we can.

With the release of Celestial Celebration, what are some of the messages or themes you hope listeners will grasp?
SH: Well you’ve already picked up on one. Some favorite band hobbies are reading, playing card-based Role Playing Games and watching Big Bang Theory and sci fi movies. Those activities made their way into the album musically and lyrically. Becoming The Archetype Metal Georgia Solid State Records 2011 Celestial Completion We’re also all about having fun and not dwelling on the negative. Those themes are also evident in both the music and lyrics of Celestial Completion. Who needs more drama and worry and negativity in their lives? Isn’t life already full of enough regret and sadness and frustration? We think so. That’s why we’re giving our listeners a release from that both with the CD and our live shows.

Seagrave and Invisible Creature put a killer package together for the album, what is meaning behind the cover?
SH: Yeah, Dan really did a great job didn’t he? Basically, the painting on the cover is a picture of the overall concept of the album. Celestial Completion is about the great things that happen at the end of the world. When this world dissolves or even when your personal world crumbles, there is a moment of promise. There is a revealing of yourself that doesn’t happen otherwise. That transcendence and completion is what we’re longing for and it may look terrible in the physical world, but it can be beautiful spiritually and mentally and emotionally.

You all are still working a variety of jobs while continuing to push forward with the music, have you learned any new secrets to monetizing the music or are you still in the developmental stages of becoming profitable musicians?
SH: We have secrets but you’ll never get them from us! Never! If every band knew how to make literally dozens of dollars like we do, everybody would be scrambling to be in a band, wouldn’t they? And that just wouldn’t do. No, not at all.

Some of the treats that are accompanying this album include an RPG based music video, metal-ska cameo by Five Iron Frenzy, Nerds of Metal promos, and a whole host of tricks–how have you been able to keep a fresh approach to faith and music?
SH: Faith is always relevant. Because it’s bigger than us, it never grows dull to those that jump in and submerge themselves. Most things in this world grow stale rather quickly because they’re so small! So meaningless, really. Yet we love to worship them. Amazing, isn’t it? But spirituality and faith are larger and more eternal than we can understand and for that reason, they continue to be vibrant in your life after countless experiences and discussions. And music is a powerful doorway to spiritual truths. I think about those things and marvel that I get to participate!

“How Great Thou Art” was an inspiration to many who believe the worship songs in the heavenly realms are more BTA than Gaither, how seriously are you considering a hardcore/metal worship album?
SH: Haha, we’ve considered it quite a lot, actually. But it’s just something that has to happen naturally. If we force it, it’s gonna come out all wrong. We’d love to do an EP of hymns, but we only wanna do it if it’s gonna be hi quality juju, ya know?

Have any other bands mentioned they would collaborate with you on this effort?
SH: Not yet, but I bet we’d find some willing partners. Suggestions?

You mention this last trip to South Africa as having left a particular impression on you as a band, what were some of the most meaningful experiences you had while on tour there?
SH: Well, standing on African soil is pretty powerful in itself. Aside from that, the tour was handled in such a way that we were able to join in with a community of ministry that already existed there. It’s something special to be able to join in and work side by side with others that have the same goal, especially when they’re on the other side of the globe.

Jason seems to have been blessed with the natural metal voice, has the voice developed over the years of was it truly a gift that just bellowed from day 1 at the mic?
SH: Reports at the hospital indicate that Jason was born fully bearded and screaming like a banshee. It’s certainly a marvel of modern birthology, to be sure.

There is a lot up in the air right now as far as the NFL negotiations go between players and owners, what is the BTA and Solidstate Records relationship like right now – have you recently renewed your contract with them or is that coming up soon?
SH: We don’t anticipate a lockout for the 2011-2012 season of BTA. The player’s union has found some common ground with the front office of T&N and a long-lasting and fruitful relationship is anticipated. Unless they extend the season to 18 games…

Becoming The Archetype is (Metal – Georgia): Seth – guitar, keys; Duck – drums; Jason – bass, lead vocals; Alex – guitar, vocals. Latest full length release Celestial Completion on Solidstate Records dropped March 2011. Keep up to date with band at the BTA Website (www.celestialcompletion.com)

One unforgettable experience as a performer that taught me volumes about music… Playing with Papa Roach was an incredible experience. They are an extremely personable and professional bunch. Strangest place that you draw inspiration from? Going to the store with my son and people watching. Humanity never ceases to amaze me. Most bizarre thing that happened to you during a show? I’d have to say it was the highly intoxicated headbanging fan girl who kept hitting me in the crotch with her flailing hair while I was onstage. Currently reading…baby food nutrition facts. This Interview! Currently watching…Big Bang Theory, Cartoons, and various cooking shows, The News. Top 5 songs in my personal ipod right now? Stone Temple Pilots – Crackerman; Five Finger Death Punch – Far From Home; Tool – Aenima; Killswitch Engage – End of Heartache; Billy Joel – Piano Man. Any crazy pre-performance rituals? Duct taping on my shoes and shorts. What has performing music taught you about life and music that you didn’t see as clearly before? Singing is such a personal experience. It has taught me courage and responsibility to our fans. I’ve learned to accept all forms of opinions – whether positive or negative, they all have helped shape us into what we are today

Since the world is so sure to end in May or October or at the latest 2012, the release of Tallboy’s debut full length album, This Logic Will Destroy Us couldn’t come soon enough. With a bit of rework on a few classics from their previous EP and an onslaught of new material, these metal heads from Medford, Oregon take one more step in their progression towards a national presence. Tallboy Metal Medford Oregon Releases This Logic Will Destroy Us Regardless of the final date for Apocalypse, the seconds are ticking down towards the end of something – might as well be rocking something local! This Logic captures the speed, angst and skill that has made Tallboy a fan favorite on stages throughout the state of Oregon but the Tallboy experience isn’t complete until you experience for yourself the explosive package that Tallboy unleashes in their live sets. Fire up a hard or digital copy of This Logic Will Destroy Us, then pack your rawk fist in a duffel bag, jump in the Fiesta and get your bad self over to a Tallboy show.

We know you are a big deal in your hometown of Medford, what have you all been working on to keep the Tallboy train moving onward and outward from your Southern Oregon base?
Tallboy The love from our amazing fans and sponsors has been the biggest driving force for us. Creating new relationships with other great bands outside of the Medford area (like Lidless Eye from Roseburg and A Single Second from Sacramento) has been great for us as well. We love them and we love traveling to their home towns to play with them.

The path to anything worthwhile is paved with ups and downs, has there been recent adversity that has caught you off guard? What did you learn from this experience(s)?
TB When we first began recording the album we went to a completely different studio. It was like a practice recording. We were just looking for the right sound and through some trial and error we’ve found it. We’ve learned to be picky – never settle if you know what you’re looking for.

Your debut full length album “This Logic Will Destroy Us” is set to release very soon, what is the meaning or message in the title?
TB My original intent behind the title was to convey my frustrations with the flaws in society’s general way of thinking. But I greatly enjoy hearing others interpretations of it as well as our lyrics.

Will this album be all new tracks or will it feature some Tallboy classics as well?
TB Four of the five songs from our EP, “We Aren’t the Champions”, were rerecorded on the album. As the songs have grown with us, we’ve chosen to represent them once again.

Tallboy Metal Medford Oregon Album This Logic Will Destroy Us 2011

Where will “This Logic Will Destroy Us” be available for fans to purchase (will it be on iTunes)?
TB Yes, the album will be on ITunes as well as locally. Our awesome sponsors, the Bomb Shelter, Play’N'Trade, and The Store will all have the CD for sale. Hopefully you will be able to find it at Best Buy also!

Who did you work with to record, edit and release this album?
TB Aaron Korpa AMK Productions, A close friend of ours from Seattle. He challenged us and forced us to explore our songs in depth. It was a frustrating yet exciting process.

For those who may just be hearing about Tallboy for the first time, how would you describe your sound and what Tallboy is about?
TB Think Incubus meets Killswitch Engage. We call it the “Tallboy Family” for a reason. Our fans are very dear to us. We love communicating and eating opinions (both good and bad) – they help us grow on many levels.

Will TLWDU feature any new musical treats, vocal twists or sound alterations?
TB I think you will hear a lot of ear candy throughout the whole album.

The Tallboy logo is in the form of a cross, was this just a design element or is there an aspect of your music that touches on the spiritual at some level?
TB It is my understanding that it is predominantly a design element – but take from it what you will.

Sickciety Medford, OR Metal Interview local music

Challenges in life often are defining moments. When a band goes through a series of transitions it can seriously challenge the tenure and stability of a band, either derailing cohesion or opening the group to a new realm of exploration as they rebuild. Sickciety is taking their own blue collar nature and fusing that with a workman’s metal to craft a sound that resonates within their local scene. The dudes of Sickciety have weathered their share of highs and lows in life as well as music to arrive at this moment where they are knocking at the door of releasing their first album. For hurdcore.com this is a first as we are excited to introduce our first fan inspired/requested interview. Big thanks to the active scene fans in Medford, Oregon as well as the gathering of metalheads that is Sickciety.

There have been some significant changes to the faces of Sickciety, was this a trial that you feel will ultimately make the band stronger?
SICK Of course it will we had to weed out those with commitment issues.

Two of your songs “Creep You Out” and “Weirdo Freak” seem to be pretty personal, are these about or aimed at individuals or more generic observations?
SICK Yes, both songs are very personal almost everything that we write are personal observations in our lives.

Sickciety is headed to (or in) the studio, what do you have planned for this album?
SICK This album is going to define us. I mean as musicians and people and we plan on doing something completely different and have an album where not every song sounds the same.

Sickciety band interview metal Medfor, Oregon live shows rock

There is metal and then there metal, Sickciety has that bare knuckles vibe where metal has been a part of the fabric of your lives from early on. If we took a time machine back to the metal roots of Sickciety would we find little metal heads running around in leopard stripes and mullets?
SICK More like a trench coat and combat boots but hiding a Winger album also some of us would have the ripped jeans and a Metallica t-shirt on too tight.

Most music fans in Oregon are aware or at least hear the rumbles of great things emerging from Medford, for those who haven’t experienced your scene what are some of the coolest things you see rising from your midst?
SICK Definitely meeting other cool bands on our local scene. We’re glad to have made friends with Tallboy and everybody knows they are completely blowing the scene up also watching some of these young high school bands like the Abyss and seeing them grow as a band also glad to see that there are a lot more venues to play at.

Sickciety appears to be a blend of sick and society, is this accurate? Is this a political statement of sorts or is there more/less to it?
SICK Yes, it is basically a play on words. We had a list of band names tried out several and Sickciety was the one that grew on us the most

Sickciety Medord, Oregon metal rock interview local band review

What do you see when you observe our society and how are you using music to help turn the tides?
SICK We see it like this, what society lacks today is heart and pride as well as toughness. I try to put all that into every song and who knows maybe it will spark something in someone. Also letting people know that there are others that suffer and feel the same things that they do so maybe when they are down and hear our music it makes them realize that they are not alone.

What has performing music taught you about life that you didn’t see as clearly before?
SICK I’ve learned that everywhere you go there are rules, regulations, trends and things that bind but with music there is none of that. Music is free form, it gives you back the things we lose as children and you can be whatever you want. Its also a great way to express everything you are feeling and get out inner frustration.

Sickciety is (Metal – Medford, Oregon): Alan G. – vocals; Randy – lead guitar; Rick – bass; Matt Edelmen – guitar; Mike Gutierezz – drums. Check out info on their upcoming album, shows and other news at the Sickciety Myspace

Interview KAB for ASSF

In preparation for The After School Special Festival to be hosted by King Arthur Booking we took some time with Samuel of KAB to get at the heart of what TASSF is all about. After School Special Revolution Room Camas WA 9/25/10 Proven Metal Hardcore Show Join King Arthur and some of the best of local metal, hardcore and progressive music from the Portland, Oregon area and beyond as they assemble at The Revolution Room in Camas, Washington on Saturday, September 25th.

Samuel, you currently sing for City Sleeps play bass for …And The Sirens Sang and are booking with King Arthur, anything else (ha ha)?
KAB Well City Asleep is pretty much dead at this point. I’ve just been reworking the songs and making them a little less Pop Punk, so its basically just me doing that now. But other then Sirens I just do solo stuff. I branch out everywhere from like, 50′s cover songs to indie stuff and I’ve done a few electronic/pop styled songs.

How do you stay fresh in your drive to push the music and in maintaining creativity?
KAB As far as keeping it new with booking I try not to book the same bands over and over again. I pretty much just cycle through a bunch of bands who seems to be doing well and mix it up. I also try to give my shows a name that kids can remember, like “The After School Special” or “The Night of The Living Dead” for the Halloween show. In my writing perspective, I just try to keep it as original as possible while staying within the same genre. I’m really into post hardcore, so you could say I’m a bit of a revivalist with that.

The After School Special Festival will be held at Revolution Coffee in Camas, WA – what makes this venue unique?
KAB The Revolution Room is sorta the “home base” per say for Sirens, and its a great friendly venue that I love. I book at Pop Culture (formerly Moxie’s) as well, but its a small venue and The Revolution Room offers the right size for a festival. Its a Christian church though, so I sometimes have problems booking certain bands due to the zero tolerance of vulgarity on and off stage. I love the venue though, and I definitely see it as a huge factor in bringing the music scene back to what it used to be.

Is this your first all day festival?
KAB This is indeed my first all day festival, but I’ve had Will Breitner [And The Sirens Sang] and Brady Johns [King Arthur Booking] helping me out a little as far as do’s and dont’s, so I feel I have a pretty good handle on it.

What inspired putting this show together?
KAB What I am going for with this show is a day where the kids can come out and listen to music and hang out with friends and have a good time and have a nice little break from the first month back in school. I pulled bands from across the board as far as genres go, with a hope that kids that tend to listen to a certain one type of music will be able to experience the other genres of the NW and hopefully come out to support those bands at other shows.

Is there a genre or theme that brings all these bands together?
KAB The general theme for this show is to basically have fun and unwind a little. You’ll find Pop Punk, Happy Hardcore, Death Metal/Deathcore and Post hardcore at this show. Its hopefully going to be a great day for the local scene.

If there were testing for steroids in metal, A Plea For Purging would likely be on the list for “persons of interest” as they continually man handle their contemporaries with their monstrous axes of metal mayhem.

A Plea For Purging finds a balance in exploring ever deepening lows without sacrificing creativity or tonal complexity as demonstrated in the new beats throughout their latest release The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (Facedown Records). These bearded behemoths of metal-with-a-message spin lyrics that serve as an indiscriminate punch to the torso for those wriggling in a mental web spun by both the irreligiously apathetic as well as the religiously corrupt. Their latest single Shiver is metal that you can move your feet to with a depth in content that you can sink your mental teeth into. A Plea For Purging clearly knows how to have fun laying down some serious metal.

Connect with lead singer Andy in our recent hurdcore.com interview with APFP. APFP’s latest album TMOHAH (Facedown Records) available in stores and on iTunes. A Plea For Purging (Metal/Hardcore) from Nashville, Tennesse is: Andy Atkins – Vocals; Blake Martin – Guitar; Tyler Wilson – Guitar; John Wand – Bass; Aaron Eckermann – Drums.

Duck We have a new guitar player so we have actually gotten back to the nitty gritty of even the classics so they seem much easier now. There is a new song that has been getting me lately though.

If I had an extra $1000, the first piece of equipment that I would purchase for the band is…
Duck I couldn’t even begin to tell you, food or gas gift cards.

Trend that you have noticed that you will never join?
Duck Crab Core

Currently reading Blue Like Jazz (again), listening to Between the Buried and Me/ Drake and Jay-Z and watching Lost, Friday Night Lights, Dexter.

Any crazy pre-performance rituals?
Duck Usually I eat too much and then try to stretch untill I feel better, or I work on a beat I can’t play.

When you are a diva/rockstar the three things that you will demand be in your dressing room are?
Duck Air Conditioning, Work out equipment, Guinness

Band you have shared the stage with that blew you away? Duck Extol, Demon Hunter

Best and worst experience at a show?
Duck Man That is the toughest question yet. Best……great crowd, great energy. This could happen anywhere. Also, host homes. Those sometimes will make up for a bad show. Bad experience could also break a night. Equipment breaking or terrible injury probably wins out but I can’t really be specific.
