Interview bassist Nate of We Move Mountains CD Release Party 10/22/10

As We Move Mountains prepares for the CD RELEASE of their debut LP this Friday (10/22/10) at Manfest 2.0, we take this opportunity to catch an interview blitz with WMM bassist Nate. The album, Brought Up In A Hurricane, is this band’s shogun challenge to the scene underlings nibbling at the periphery of authenticity, as BUIAH is distinctly raw in the fashion that fans have come to love with indications of growth that will propel We Move Mountains far beyond their local scene in Maple Valley, Washington. One of our songs that personally means a lot to me? “Sleight of hand”. I means a lot to me because the lyrics really apply to every person in our band. I really can’t help but get into the music because i think its really powerful and just good. If I had an extra $1000, the first piece of equipment I would purchase for the band is A bass cab. I play music because I love music. A lot of people say ” music is my life, without it my life would end.” Not to sound stupid and dramatic like them but I really just love music and love playing it and without it I really don’t know what i would do. We Move Mountains CD Release Brought Up In A Hurricane Washington Oregon Hardcore Concert

From start to finish Brought Up In A Hurricane is a chaotic whirlwind of raw emotion executed with freshmen savvy that will leave fans appetites awakened for a taste of something they want more of. In 12 tracks We Move Mountains unleashes furious assault upon the musical senses with rapid fire instruments napalming their way through an mp3 wasteland of black smedium t-shirts. We Move Mountains will take no prisoners but they will captivate listeners with an album that is well produced while refreshingly raw.

This album includes fan favorite tracks such as “Dan Nettekoven Snakes The Win” which released earlier this year with the bands first music video and “You Better Watch Your Throat” which belts out identifiable incantations such as “I’m normal. I’m normal. I swear to God I’m normal.” We Move Mountains skillfully blends several elements of hardcore to such a degree that at the opening of “Congratulations Universe, You Win” I was infused with favorable memories of some of the most enjoyable bands coming up through local scenes at the turn of the century. In “Dude, Cameron, Bro” the band takes a well placed detour from pure brutality to demonstrate their potential for diversity by reaching a straightforward rock ambience with clear vocals spiced perfectly with screams and running leads that crescendo in a breakdown finale.

Throughout Brought Up In A Hurricane, the vocals and guitars take their turn in leading songs and overall meld artfully to construct a total sound that is diverse, genuine and compelling. We Move Mountains manages to capture the energy that make their live sets memorable to such a degree that one can imagine band members passing out at the end of the recording process. To placate the thirst for definitions, this album is best described as a chaotic mash of genres the likes of spazzcore sans overt femininity (spazz-man-core), screamo without the droning and metalcore with chunk laden breakdowns. We Move Mountains gets plenty low but does not substitute down tuning for innovation, as the guitars constantly chop through each track matching the unbridled emotion of each scream, grunt, rapid downbeat and cymbal clash.

We Move Mountains Brought Up In A Hurricane Debut CD 10/22/10

As one of the most recent additions to the album the song “Pterodactyls” takes the vocals to a into a new precipice of guttural treats and is perhaps the most telling as to the maturation and direction We Move Mountains will take as they continue to progress as a band. For a band that is already bursting at the seams of their tight pants, if they continue to expand their musical arsenal they are likely to detonate into a mushroom cloud of galactic creativity dust. Brought Up In A Hurricane is this band’s shogun challenge to the scene underlings nibbling at the periphery of authenticity, this album is distinctly raw in the fashion that fans have come to love with indications of growth that will propel We Move Mountains far beyond their local scene in Maple Valley, Washington.

Local and national stories within the entertainment industry abound with many of the upcoming artists of today operating without class, conducting themselves with little respect for fans or for those who have come before them. We Move Mountains CD Release Brought Up In A Hurricane Washington Oregon Hardcore Concert The young men of We Move Mountains, through hard work and an uniquely deepening intimacy with their fans, have carved for themselves a blossoming legacy of invigorating melodic hardcore. With a blistering blend of beauty and brutality, We Move Mountains besets their fans with bowel rumbling breakdowns, blood curdling bellows and get-your-booty-moving melodically interwoven beats. Their message is sincere and overall positive as their music continues to mature with the members of the band. We Move Mountains is keeping Maple Valley classy as they build upon a solid foundation of friendship and a dragon slayers commitment to musical innovation. Hurdcore.com is glad to re-introduce We Move Mountains as they prepare to release their debut album “Brought Up In A Hurricane.”

You were selected to play the Vans Warped Tour Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands in Boise in 09 – how cool of an experience was that?
Zesty Sams (vocals) As cool as it sounds and more. Growing up (which is something we’re still doing a lot of), it was our dream to play Warped Tour. Conquering such a titan of a goal so young felt phenomenal. It’s honestly still hitting us from time to time. We’d still love to play the whole thing year after year and hope we get the opportunity!

The video for Dan Nettekoven Snakes The Win turned out all pro, what was the process and who did you work with to shoot this video?
ZS So glad you guys liked it! It was actually a project for Keller’s [Guitar/Vocals] Video Production class. Him and our good friend, Mark worked the camera. It was filmed down in South Bend at this warehouse called Terra Firma, owned by a family friend. Speaking of family, the boy and ballerinas in the video were Keller’s cousins! Then after a long day of filming, Keller spent a couple weeks editing it all and ended up with the final product! We were pretty proud of him for making a high school project look so professional.

We Move Mountains Maple Valley Hardcore Popular Local Washington Oregon Hardcore

So, I did a little digging – there is a young man by the name of Dan Nettekoven who happens to live in Maple Valley with y’all, does the song have anything to do with Dan?
ZS Oh man Jon, we were rolling on the floor for this one. Here’s the ridiculous story of Dan Nettekoven. Dan was a buddy of ours, nothing too special. Until he started getting away with all these things he definitely shouldn’t have been getting away with. In other words, this kid was snaking the win. Then we met another guy who looked just like Dan Nettekoven, who happened to be snaking the win as well. One day, working on the song (still untitled at the time), Dan was the topic of our conversation. After laughing deliriously at how silly we were, Dan Nettekoven Snakes The Win snaked the win for best song title. So I guess the point is, no, he has absolutely nothing to do with us! But now people see him at the local grocery store and are like “OMG DAN NETTEKOVEN”. He’s become quite the celebrity.

The chorus for this song belts, “Life has taught me, friends you’ll never know – and we’re all kinds of ****ed up differents” What does this mean for you personally?
ZS Well for the most part, it means exactly what it says. The lyrics in that song aren’t about one specific thing. It was one of the best rants I’ve had, a huge group of somethings I needed to get of my back. One of those things I just had to tell myself was “you’ve had a great run so far and all along the way, you’ve had people supporting you and dragging you down, but most importantly, making you who you are. Be thankful”. I am thankful, especially thankful to be friends with the guys in the band. It’s for everyone I’ve ever shared up and downs with, or even just a walk to the local market. Friends have always been there for me, and i know the best ones always will be.

Zesty handles the screaming and Keller works the sexy vox, your songs are very fluid in the transitions from breakdowns to harmonies, is the writing process for you like a blacksmith banging out a piece of metal or are you guys at such a point that once the core idea is formed everyone pretty much falls in like a 24 piece Elmo puzzle from the dollar store?
ZS People are going to enjoy the questions more than the answers for sure! haha. I wish we could say we were all blacksmiths, but the Elmo puzzle seems more fitting…no pun intended? Our songs come together as if we bought a piece at a time. Riff by riff, they slowly come together, then drums are worked in, and vocals/lyrics last. We currently have two in the works! One is untitled, and the other that is near completion is called “There She Blows…And Boy, Does She!”.

“I’m normal. I’m normal. I swear to God, I’m normal.” First of all, this song is a lie, the dudes of WMM are anything but normal – ha ha, and secondly that is what makes you great! Does this song touch on your own journey to find your spot in the game of life or more reaching out to those who are trying so hard to “fit in” (or both or neither, ha ha)?
ZS Kind of both. At school, we were always kind of the misfits/floaters, but that was okay with us. We were true to ourselves, and more than content with that. A large number of our peers, however, were sacrificing so much happiness just to fit this silly mold of “normal”. They were always working for someone else’s satisfaction. All the while, we, the people happy with our lives and who we were growing up to be, were the ones being ridiculed for being “weird/freaks”. So in the end, the line turned out to be us mocking them, i guess. Everyone does strange things, so why can’t we just accept that and have that be the norm.

Zesty Sams Hardcore Vocals We Move Mountains Washington Oregon Concert

Last we talked you were preparing to enter phase 2 of recording your full length, Did you complete recording for Brought Up In A Hurricane?
ZS Tracking is finished! The CD is going through it’s final phases of mixing/mastering/printing. We had the album art redone with our buddy, Christopher Moore of ZeroART, and it was a fantastic decision. His final product shattered our expectations and will be released with a layout and a new song, “Pterodactyls” very soon!

Is there a theme/message to this album?
ZS Yes there is! It’s how the album came to be renamed (used to be Violence, Violence, Violins) now that you mention it. The only thing in common with all of the songs is that each one dealt with a hardship faced by either me(zesty) or Keller. It’s not like I grew up poverty stricken and dying of hunger in war torn Africa or anything, but I did my fair share of growing up in a very small amount of time, that put me through all sorts of emotions and thoughts. I came out the other end with all of these songs, so we think the title fits perfectly!

Where can fans get a copy?
ZS BUIAH will be $10 at shows! As of right now, mail orders are looking like they’ll be possible with an extra $5 for shipping and we’ll be doing our best to get it onto iTunes!

Who did you work with on this recording and what was the experience like as you cut your first full length?
ZS Sean Green of Gun Ho Productions! He used to be in Sanctity In Silence and is a wonderful friend of ours. Listening to our songs come out in such clear quality was awesome, and there was plenty of smiling at the finished product. We can’t wait to have the shrink-wrapped copy in our hands!

How has your view of music changed (good or bad) since you started WMM?
ZS I’m pretty sure for most of us, it’s stayed the same. If anything has changed it would be that all of these bands we’re looking up to were and might still be just like us. People who love playing music and having a good time! But at the same time, we’ve become more aware of the bands that don’t really care, and play music for gold, wenches, or fame. We slay dragons because we enjoy the copper scent, the crimson shower, and the deafening roar of a freshly slain dragon!

Interview w/ We Move Mountains

You may have never heard of Maple Valley, Washington (I had to look it up) but you will soon be hearing a lot from their young and expanding talent. I was first introduced to We Move Mountains when I was doing some research on Rock For Reason, a local youth led group that seeks to raise awareness and support to bring clean water to Africa. While the music of WMM is definitely hard, it is far from defined by the hardcore tag alone, this is an eclectic blend of emotion, creativity and sheer brutality. Thanks to WMM for taking the time to conduct this Myspace interview…

HC What inspired the name of your band? How did your band come together?
WMM Well Bones(drummer) and I(Zesty/screamer) both picked up new instruments after the last band had fallen apart. We were tired of fooling around and not having any fun. In order to have a solid band name that we both enjoyed, time and a lot of poor names came up. We Move Mountains ended up sticking. We found it unique, fitting, and just badass! Then we picked up Keller and Barret from another fallen local band, The Wi-fi Brothers. Eventually, Barret parted ways to Afterwords, and we got Nate. Nate was a no-brainer choice, as he is amazing at every Zelda game. He ended up picking up the bass for us, and surpassed the expectations we had tenfold. Our most recent lineup change was Ethan. We knew him from a local Death Metal band, Aschemia. He had showed interest in joining before, and so when we felt I needed to choose between guitar and vocals, Ethan was another first choice. The current WMM is the best it has ever been. And here we are!

HC How would you describe your musical style?
WMM Oh man, this question is tough for us. We honestly just write until it sounds good. I’m not going to compare us to anything, because I feel have our own sound, but we’ve heard things like ” a cross between Fear Before The March of Flames/Heavy Heavy Low Low”. I’d say our music is catchy and all over the board. You never know what you’re going to get from us!

HC What is unique about your band? What makes your band/sound different from other offerings?
WMM We put our hearts into our music. That puts a band out of the crowd instantly and is the most important thing to us. Our influences have contributed a lot as well. Though there’s the number of bands we all listen to, our core influences are very diverse. Mine being The Mars Volta, Bones’ being Metallica, Keller’s being Blink-182 and so on. At a glance, I’m sure we’re just another band following the “core” fad, but if you really give us a listen, it’s much more than that.

HC You are currently based out of Maple Valley, WA, are you all natives? What do you enjoy most about the local scene?
WMM We are actually! I moved out of state for a while, but ended up coming back after a few years just in time for High School to start up. Maple Valley’s music scene isn’t there. Sure, there’s a few bands, but the supporters are limited to that and a few others. We like to head out to Tacoma to the Viaduct and Club Impact. We feel very at home at both places, and the environments of both are very family oriented, and more importantly, all about the music and helping the local scene!

HC Is there a driving force behind the composition of your band and your method to writing music? Would you describe yourselves as a political, religious or any other central cause/theme?
WMM As I said earlier, it comes from our hearts. I’ll start churning out lyrics like it’s nothing if I’m going through a rough time in my life. As for the instruments, once someone sparks, we all explode and will crank out a great song in a day or two. We like to write the guitar parts first, then add drums and vocals. None of our stuff is political, religious or any of that. Our stuff deals with hardships that everyone goes through, and looking at the flaws of ourselves and how we can better them.

HC Where can those interested best connect with you to find out about news, releases and tours?
WMM I don’t think we’ll ever jump onto the Twitterwagon. Twitter creeps us out. Texting and myspace is enough information as it is. Hourly updates on millions of people? Just creepy. Myspace is the best way to get in touch with us, whether it be on the bands page or one of our personals. We’re very friendly guys and love interacting with the fans we have, and letting them know how much they mean to us.

HC Where are you at currently in terms of releasing anything and/or gearing up for a tour?
WMM At this very moment, we’re recording round two of our full length. We had been planning a tour for this Summer, but it was way tougher than we expected and things fell through. We’re hoping to get out there sometime before the year’s over though. WMM is still young, being between 15-17, and although we’re trying to take big steps, sometimes we take a step back and realize how young we really are.

HC Where are you currently grabbing inspiration and/or frustration from and how has this been affecting your music?
WMM I don’t think we could narrow it down to any one thing. Every passing day affects our music. I wish I could answer this better…

HC What have been some of the most important lessons for you as aspiring-artists? WMM Give respect, get respect. That’s a huge one for us. And get a trailer as soon as you can!

HC Are there any favorite/funny/scary memories from recent tours or shows that you’d like to share? Have you done much touring?
WMM We still haven’t toured yet and haven’t experienced many shenanigans either. Bummer, eh?

HC We’ve recently become aware of the efforts of Rock For Reason and noticed that you’ve been playing at several their concerts, how did you get involved with RFR?
WMM Rock for Reason! Woowoo! Yeah, actually Keller and I are on the RFR Team. The whole thing is lead by our buddy, Cameron. We’ve been helping out since the very first show, and We Move Mountains was lucky enough to play it too! As part of the staff, and one of the local bands, we are lucky enough to get on most of the bills and play those AMAZING shows! I encourage everyone to check out RFR’s myspace, get informed, and help out any way you can!

Having trouble finding a good local band or venue that will allow you to do more than bob up and down like a buoy?! Hurdcore.com is bringing the music to the people, we offer a glimpse into the background and mind of Graham, Washington based hardcore band Swinglow. Our thanks to Trevor of Swinglow for taking the time to share with us.

HC What inspired the name of your band?
SL i kinda just picked it out of a list of names our drummer made and i really liked it so we kept it haha.

HC When did your band go from the dream stage to actually putting tracks down and going on the road?
SL well we started jamming and making music back in april of last year but didn’t really start playing shows till October and since we’ve been playing shows off and on and recorded an ep.

HC How would you describe your musical style?
SL i personally would call us hardcore with a mix of melodic and metal influences.

HC Where are you at currently in terms of writing and/or releasing an album?
SL well we just released an ep about a month ago and we will start recording another short demo in june as for a full length we would like to starting writing for that by the end of summer as for releasing i honestly have no idea.

HC Where can those interested best connect with you to find out about news, releases and tours?
SL um definitely www.myspace.com/swinglowsucks :D

HC From the concept of your band, the makeup of its members and the lyrics of your songs, would you say that there is a prominent theme (i.e. religious, political, philosophical, etc)?
SL yes i guess would say the theme is simply music that is glorifying to god and nothing less.

HC Where are you currently grabbing inspiration and/or frustration from and how has this been affecting your music?
SL from worship songs, sermons at my church and personal experiences.

HC What have been some of the most important lessons for you as struggling-artists?
SL i guess we’ve learned lately not to rush things especially when it comes to getting new songs ready its better to go at your own pace and see how things play out.

HC Are there any favorite/funny/scary memories from your current tour that you’d like to share?
SL so far we’ve played only one out of state show in waldport oregon and it was interesting but no great stories to tell yet.

HC What has been your favorite tour stop so far? What new foods have you discovered (scary or good)?
SL since we havn’t had a tour yet i wouldn’t know haha

HC What has been the most challenging part of taking your band public?
SL i guess just finding time to fit show’s,practices, ect into all of our busy schedule for the last 6 months this has been our main problem.

HC Any words of encouragement for aspiring bands?
SL i would just stick with it as long as possible you never know what could come of it!
